Jake is a commercial litigator and formidable advocate in complex business disputes in court and arbitration. He represents companies and individuals in shareholder and corporate governance litigation, including oppression claims, director and officer liability, partnership disputes, and commercial fraud.
His practice also covers contract and property disputes, defamation claims, intellectual property matters, product liability actions, and class action defence.
He has appeared as counsel at all levels of court in British Columbia, and in other Canadian jurisdictions. He also regularly acts in commercial arbitrations.
Jake is a strategic and persuasive advocate. He builds case strategy around each client’s business objectives. He is recognized for his experience in urgent injunction practice, securing and resisting orders that protect assets and business operations, including preservation orders, gag orders, and other time-sensitive remedies.
Sector experience includes: mining, energy, shipping, technology, banking, telecommunications, life sciences, retail, construction, infrastructure, cryptocurrency, aviation, commercial real estate, education, cannabis, and sports.
Jake writes and presents on injunctions, exclusion of liability, advocacy, sport law, and developments in class proceedings.
Before law, Jake played volleyball for five seasons with the UBC Thunderbirds and four seasons professionally in Europe and Southeast Asia. He remains active in the sport community. He represents athletes and associations in sport arbitrations, advises sport organizations on governance, volunteers on boards, and coaches.
Jake grew up in Whitehorse and is licensed to practise law in Yukon as well as British Columbia.

- Counsel for Vincent Yen in a major shareholder dispute between the two major shareholders of airG, a mobile software company founded in 2000.
- Counsel for Tangerine Bank in a a long-running dispute involving an individual. The individual commenced many duplicative actions against Tangerine and its CEO, in multiple court registries, all of which were successfully dismissed. Successfully obtained an order striking the notice of civil claim pursuant to Rule 9-5 of the Supreme Court Civil Rules; an order declaring that the individual is a vexatious litigant; an order that Ms. Martin be prohibited from initiating a legal proceeding in any court and filing materials in an existing legal proceeding without leave of the court; and special costs: Martin v.
