Alex practices corporate and commercial law with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, venture capital and private equity transactions. He regularly assists foreign companies doing business in Canada, as well as private companies at all stages of their life cycle.

He has acted for acquirers such as Bell Canada and private equity groups including Berkshire Partners, IVC Evidensia, Haveli Investments, HG Capital, VCA Canada (Mars, Incorporated), as well as investors such as Fonds de Solidarité FTQ, Cycle Capital, iNovia Capital and Desjardins Capital in various investments and exit transactions.

In addition, Alex is regularly involved with non-profit organizations and has served on the board of the China Canada Junior Chamber of Commerce (CCJCC), where he remains a member. He is also a member of the Young Chinese Professional Association (YCPA) and BLG’s Asia Pacific initiative, and a frequent attendee at events organized by the Canadian Chinese Entrepreneurs Council (CCEC) and the Canada China Business Council (CCBC).

Experience

  • Represented Bell Media in its acquisition of Octane Racing Group, the exclusive promoter of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, the largest annual sports and tourism event in Canada.
  • Acted for Bell Canada in its acquisition of cloud managed and professional service provider FXInnovation.
  • Advised iNovia Capital as lead investor in a US$20M Series B round in ESG software reporting company Novisto Inc.
  • Acted for Bell Media in its acquisition of a minority stake in TV, film and animation indie production company Sphere Media.
  • Acted for Bell Media in its divestiture of radio station businesses across Canada.
  • Assisted Cycle Capital, Desjardins-Innovatech, Fonds de solidarité FTQ and Investissement Québec in a $38-million funding round in Airex Energy to accelerate the company's plans to expand its production of low-carbon industrial and agricultural products made from biomass.
  • Advised iNovia Capital and Fonds de solidarité FTQ as co-leads in a US$50 million Series D funding round in Workjam (online workforce management). Blumberg Capital and Demopolis Equity Partners also participated in the round.
  • Acted for Ingersoll Rand (NYSE:IR) in its CAN$135.4 million acquisition of Maximus Solutions.
  • Advised MACH Capital in connection with its acquisition of approximately $1.5 billion of retail and office properties from Cominar REIT.
  • Advised Cadence Design Systems, a Silicon Valley-based electronic design automation (EDA) software company, on its acquisition of Newfoundland-based startup InspectAR Augmented Interfaces.
  • Acted for Illumiti in the sale of its SAP systems integration and management consultancy business to Syntax.
  • Acted for Revision Military Inc. and its affiliates in connection with the carve-out and sale of its global military eyewear business.
  • Acted for VetStrategy in connection with Berkshire Partners’ acquisition of a majority stake in VetStrategy from Imperial Capital with a deal value of over US$1.4 billion.
  • Acted for McKinsey Consulting in its capital investment and strategic agreement with Element AI (AI).
  • Acted for Astral Media in its acquisition of Newad Media.
  • Acted for Factora Solutions and its shareholders in the sale to PTC (IoT).
  • Served on a team of legal advisors to a syndicate of lenders headed by the Bank of Montréal in a CAN$120M cross-border syndicated financing to Napec Inc., a North American public corporation specializing in energy solutions.
  • Served on a team of legal advisors to Texas-based HollyFrontier Corp. in its acquisition of Suncor Energy's Petro-Canada Lubricants business for CAN$1.125B.
  • Acted for a large Canadian pension fund manager in the acquisition of a 10% co-investment interest in the Scotia Plaza office complex in Toronto.
  • Acted for the Fonds de solidarité, a capital development fund, in its CAN$70M investment in EBI, a leading enterprise in the field of waste management, renewable energy product ion and natural gas in Québec.
  • Acted for the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (lead investor) in a CAN$20M round of financing in Frank & Oak (alongside Investissement Québec and Goodwater Capital).
  • Acted for Black & McDonald Ltd., a national multi-trade contractor, to expand its operations in Québec's utility market through the acquisition of Pierre Brossard (1981) ltée, a leading construction enterprise in the electrical and civil engineering sector.
  • Advised several purchasers and vendors in the acquisition and sale of veterinary clinics across Canada.
  • Acted for a Montréal-based hotel owner/manager with respect to hotel management business across Canada.
