Matt represents private and public clients in administrative, real estate, intellectual property, municipal, and procurement disputes. His broad commercial litigation practice also covers corporate governance, lending, and contractual matters.

Matt also represents oil and gas, renewable generation, and electrical transmission clients before tribunals and the courts in relation to project approval and land access.

Matt has represented clients at all levels of court in Alberta as well as the Federal Court and arbitration panels. He acts before various tribunals including the Alberta Utilities Commission, the Land and Property Rights Tribunal, the Alberta Energy Regulator and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.

Before joining BLG in 2018, Matt completed a clerkship with the Alberta Court of King's Bench and articled at a boutique Indigenous and energy law firm.

    • TransAlta Corporation v Alberta Energy Regulator, 2023 ABCA 172: dismissal of an application for leave to appeal stay and standing decisions of the Alberta Energy Regulator.
    • Northern Air Charters (PR) Inc v Alberta Health Services, 2023 ABCA 114: dismissal of an appeal seeking to introduce expert evidence on procurement practices into a judicial review.
    • Pelletier v Canada (Attorney General), 2022 FC 1002: success in judicial review overturning tribunal decision denying pension benefits to veteran.
    • Karnalyte Resources Inc v Phinney, 2020 ABQB 119: dismissal of an Action alleging improper proxy solicitation. Subsequently obtained an award of solicitor-client costs in Karnalyte Resources Inc v Phinney, 2021 ABQB 26.
    • Questor Technology Inc v Stagg, 2020 ABQB 3; Questor Technology Inc v Stagg, 2021 ABQB 644: dismissal of injunctions against former employees seeking to prohibit them from competing with the plaintiff and to pay revenue into trust pending trial.
    • Xpress Lube & Car Wash Ltd v Gill, 2019 ABQB 898: dismissal of an Action for long delay with an award of enhanced costs.

    • Re Saamis Solar Park Limited, Alberta Utilities Commission Decision 27788-D01-2024: obtained approval to construct and operate a 325 MW solar power plant and substation.
    • JC Williams Inc. v Alberta Health Services, Bid Protest 2024-BP001: dismissal of a bid protest under the New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA) and Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA).
    • Re Bonterra Energy Corporation, (March 21, 2022), Regulatory Appeal No. 1935997; (September 23, 2022), Regulatory Appeal No. 1935997: dismissal of an application to the Alberta Energy Regulator to stay well licences, followed by successful dismissal of regulatory appeal.
    • ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd v RJR Enterprises Ltd, 2022 ABLPRT 1315: obtained $942,000.00 compensation on behalf of a landowner following a regulatory taking.
    • Bonterra Energy Corp v Rosells’ Enterprises Ltd, 2022 ABLPRT 1243: representative of numerous similar files, favourable defence of operator’s rate of compensation to landowner for new or ongoing oil and gas operations.
