Amanda practices in the commercial disputes group. She is also a member of the Appellate and Public Law practice group.

Amanda represents and advises a variety of clients before all levels of courts in complex civil, commercial and public law disputes, including class actions, administrative, constitutional and human rights law cases. She also acts in recognition and enforcement matters, including enforcement of arbitral awards under the New York and Washington Conventions.

Amanda’s litigation and arbitration practice is transnational and spans several industries, including broadcasting and telecommunications, financial services, aerospace, infrastructure, consumer products and entertainment.

Before joining BLG, Amanda served as a law clerk at the Québec Court of Appeal for the Honourable Nicole Duval Hesler, then Chief Justice and the Honourable Guy Cournoyer.

Amanda is legally trained in the civil law and common law systems. After four years of combined study, she earned a dual J.D./LL.B. (Civil) respectively from Osgoode Hall Law School and the Université de Montréal, Faculté de Droit. She is fluent in French, English and Arabic.

Experience

  • Represents investors in Indian telecoms company in litigation proceedings relating to the recognition and enforcement of investment treaty awards in excess of US$110 million against the Republic of India.
  • Represents a Chilean company in the recognition and enforcement of an arbitration award of over C$185 million in Canadian courts against an Italian multinational construction company.
  • Represents an international automobile manufacturer in an institutional arbitration and in its defence against annulment proceedings of the arbitration award.
  • Represents Amazon.com in a competition class action.
  • Represents Electronic Arts (EA) in a national class action alleging illegal gambling.
  • Represents HSBC in the Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fee class action.
  • Represents the Société des alcools du Québec in an environmental class action.
  • Represents B2B Bank in a class action alleging illegal interest rate hikes.
  • Secured the acquittal of a multinational company before the Court of Appeal of Québec of penal offences under a by-law on air pollutant emissions.
  • Represented the Conférence des juges de la Cour du Québec in the Reference to the Court of appeal of Québec respecting the decision of the Chief justice of the Court of Québec to reduce the number of days on which the judges assigned to the criminal and penal division sit.
