BLG partner appointed Justice of the Court of King's Bench of Alberta

Calgary (January 29, 2026) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) partner Peter D. Banks has been appointed Justice of the Court of King's Bench of Alberta.

Peter Banks joined BLG in 2015 as a litigator in the firm's Calgary office, practising complex commercial and construction litigation and arbitration. He has acted on numerous significant matters in litigation and domestic and international arbitration, particularly involving large industrial and infrastructure projects.

Peter brought extensive experience before the Court of King's Bench of Alberta, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada, and in arbitration matters under ICC, UNCITRAL, and ADRIC rules.

"Peter’s appointment to the bench is a testament to his outstanding legal acumen and unwavering commitment to justice," said David Di Paolo, BLG's National Managing Partner. "While we'll miss his contributions to our commercial and construction disputes practice, we're immensely proud of this well-deserved recognition."

Peter obtained his LLB with Distinction from the University of Alberta in 2002, where he was awarded the Horace Harvey Gold Medal in Law. He subsequently studied at the University of Oxford, obtaining a BCL with Distinction. He clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada for Justice Major in 2004-2005.

Peter was admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2025. He previously served as chair of The Advocates' Society's Construction Law Practice Group, the CBA's Civil Litigation South Section, and co-chaired the CBA Inns of Court Committee. Peter was also an Honorary Overseas Member of the Commercial Bar Association of England and Wales (COMBAR) and served as principal to several articling students.

BLG partner Robert Deane appointed King's Counsel in British Columbia

National (January 22, 2026) - Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) Partner Robert J.C. Deane has been appointed King's Counsel in British Columbia in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the legal profession and broader community.

Rob, who serves as National Leader of BLG's Arbitration Group, brings more than two decades of expertise in complex commercial litigation and arbitration in a diverse array of industries. He has appeared as counsel before all levels of court in several Provinces, in major arbitration proceedings around the world, and is frequently appointed as arbitrator. Rob also serves as an elected member of the firm's Partnership Board.

His dedication to advancing the legal profession includes service on the Law Society Tribunal, the Attorney General's Advisory Committee on Commercial Arbitration, and the board of directors of The Advocates' Society.

Beyond his professional achievements, Rob also serves as Vice-Chair of Cystic Fibrosis Canada, among his other community activities.

The King's Counsel designation, conferred by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, is a provincial honour recognizing contributions that strengthen the functioning of the legal system. No more than seven per cent of practising British Columbia lawyers can hold this designation at any time.

Peter D. Banks practices in complex commercial and construction litigation and arbitration. Canada (December 3, 2025) - Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) has expanded its multi-decade partnership with Thomson Reuters by adopting CoCounsel firmwide. Building on BLG's use of Westlaw and Practical Law, CoCounsel provides lawyers and legal support teams with integrated AI capabilities for research, drafting, and document analysis.

Recognizing that client expectations are evolving, BLG is committed to anticipating client needs and exploring new approaches to legal work using emerging AI capabilities. This means reimagining workflows to free up lawyer time for complex problem-solving and strategic work, enabling teams to rethink how matters are handled and drive greater value for clients. By embracing AI, the firm is positioning itself for more agile client service in a rapidly evolving environment. To support these efforts, BLG needed tools that could handle growing work volume and sophistication without compromising quality.

This Giving Tuesday, the Foundation is proud to announce its inaugural major donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada, supporting their mission to empower youth through mentorship nationwide.

With this contribution, The BLG Foundation will be recognized in the organization's prestigious Chair's Circle, reserved for donors who contribute $250,000 or more annually. This donation reflects the firm's commitment to making a focused and meaningful impact in the communities where BLG operates.

In this role, Catherine will oversee the full legal professional journey at BLG, from student recruitment through partner retirement. She will manage programs and strategies designed to attract, develop and retain top legal talent, working closely with leaders across the firm. She will be a member of the firm’s National Management Committee and report directly to the firm’s National Managing Partner, ensuring the talent strategy is closely aligned with BLG’s strategic goals.

“Catherine brings deep expertise in legal talent advisory and a clear vision for elevating the lawyer experience including with our partners, associates, counsel and students,” says BLG’s National Managing Partner and CEO, David Di Paolo. “Her appointment reflects BLG’s commitment to building an environment where lawyers can thrive while delivering exceptional service to clients.”

Since joining BLG in 2019, Catherine has advanced through increasingly senior leadership roles, most recently serving as National Director, Talent Advisory for the firm’s Disputes group. Catherine began her career as a litigator, practicing for six years before moving into legal talent management. Prior to joining BLG, she served as Director of Student and Lawyer Programs at another national firm. She holds a law degree and a certificate in Organizational Development from HEC Montréal, combining legal expertise with organizational insight to guide her leadership in this new role.

Nadia is Chair of BLG’s Appellate Advocacy and Public Law groups and National Business Leader of the Commercial Litigation group. For more than 20 years, Nadia has been trusted with some of the most high-profile and sensitive cases in the country. Bianca Kratt, K.C. begins her term as President of the Canadian Bar Association

National (September 2, 2025) – BLG Partner Bianca Kratt, K.C. has begun a one-year term as President of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), succeeding Lynne M.J. Vicars. Bianca previously served as Vice-President from 2024 to 2025.

A commercial real estate lawyer with more than 20 years of experience, Bianca advises clients on leasing, acquisitions and dispositions, secured lending and project development.

Bianca’s commitment to the profession extends beyond her practice. She was president of the CBA Alberta Branch from 2021–2022, is a past president of the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Alberta and serves on the advisory committee of the Canadian chapter of the International Association of Women Judges. She also sits on the Law Commission of Canada advisory council and, in 2023, served on the Independent Advisory Board for Supreme Court of Canada judicial appointments.

Bianca’s theme for the year, Building a Resilient Legal Profession, reflects her view that resilience means preparing for what lies ahead and adapting as circumstances change. For the legal sector, that includes ensuring courts have adequate resources, supporting lawyers’ well-being, using innovations such as artificial intelligence responsibly and building a profession that reflects the diversity of Canada.

“For me [this role] is about more than a title”, Bianca said. “It’s about showing that leadership can look different. It can come from someone who didn’t grow up in a legal family, someone who had to learn English as an adult, someone who carries Indigenous heritage. I hope my journey sends a message that the CBA belongs to all of us, and that every lawyer has a place in shaping the future of our profession.”

With nearly 20 years of experience, Adina has built a reputation as a trusted advisor and go-to litigator for clients navigating the legal complexities of land use planning, infrastructure development, and regulatory compliance. She regularly leads high-profile, precedent-setting litigation files involving expropriation, property tax, and energy matters — cases that shape jurisprudence and influence public policy.

Early in her career, Lindsey spent close to a decade at BLG, working closely with lawyers across the firm and advancing through senior positions. She returns after leading the marketing and business development teams at a prominent litigation boutique and working in a sales role at one of the Big Four professional services firms.

In memory of Alexander K. Paterson

It is with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of Alexander Kennedy Paterson on August 6, 2025. Alex began his law career in 1957 at the firm of Heward, Holden, Hutchison Cliff, McMaster & Meighen and was made partner in 1969. He retired from the same firm known as BLG in 2008, although continued to return to the office until a few years ago.

There were many facets to AKP’s life. He would often talk about his family, his dear wife and cheerleader extraordinaire Joany as well as their children (Robb, Tim, Angie, and Alex), only to be followed in subsequent years by many grandchildren.

Alex was a talented and accomplished barrister who pleaded before all courts of Québec, the Supreme Court of Canada on multiple occasions, parliamentary commissions, and administrative tribunals. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers Association, awarded the Medal of Honour of the Montréal Bar and was bestowed the distinction of Advocatus Emeritus (2010) by the Barreau du Québec. Most notably, he was the lead negotiator on behalf of the Québec government during the Oka Crisis and was retained as the Québec government’s special inquirer in relation to labour disputes in Québec school systems (1976). He also acted as Québec counsel for Sergei Nemstanov, who defected from Russia to Canada at the Montréal Olympic Games.

Alex made an extraordinary commitment within the community, for which he was appropriately recognized when he was awarded the Order of Canada (1982), Ordre national du Québec (1993), Order of Montréal (1998), and several honorary degrees.

In the education field, he was a member of the board (1995-2005) and chancellor of Bishop’s University, chairman of the Board of Governors of McGill University (1990-1995), and chair of the Advisory Council of the Québec English School Board Association.

In the health sector, he participated in the development of health legislation in Québec for 30 years, taught medical law at McGill (1973-1979), was the chairman of the Steering Committee responsible for setting up the MUHC, at one point interim chair of the board of the MUHC (1994-1995), as well as president of the Mackay Centre and its foundation, the Butters Home Foundation, and the Adaptive Sports Foundation.

More generally in the community, he was chair of the Foundation of Greater Montréal, co-chair of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, founding chairman of Alliance Québec (1982), vice-president of the Québec / Canada Pre-Referendum Executive Committee for the No. The citation at the time of the awarding of his Order of Canada reads: “In the past ten years he has come strongly to the fore as champion of the English-speaking minority of Québec, and of cooperation — rather than separation between language groups. So great was his zeal for Canadian unity that he has been nicknamed the “Confederation Man.”

In the business community, he was a director of several companies over the years, including APV-Hall Crepaco, Laurentian Bank of Canada, Laurentian Trust of Canada, and the Fondation de l’Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec.

He was also a raconteur extraordinaire. The essence of the man and his love for storytelling can be read in his autobiography published in 2005, entitled My Life at the Bar and Beyond.

Alex built an ironclad reputation rooted in four guiding principles: supporting his fellow partners, delivering outstanding client service, nurturing professional excellence, and giving back to the community. In living out these principles daily, Alex was an impressively versatile man: he could charm nine justices of the Supreme Court one day and then read to school children the next; he could draft a legal opinion for high-profile clients one day and then lead fundraising efforts for the Montréal Children’s Hospital Foundation the next. No matter what he was doing, Alex led by example and introduced a wonderful character, Chaim, to our mail room to provide him with real-life experience. Alex had a caring and personable leadership.

“It is often said that you won’t remember what someone said, but how they made you feel. Alex greeted everyone with a smile, made them feel at ease, and treated them with respect. Alex was a role model to countless lawyers and members of the Firm, including myself. His generosity for helping others knew no bounds. His principles laid the foundation for generations of BLG lawyers to come and constitute core values of the Firm’s culture today,” concludes close friend and BLG Partner John G. Murphy.

Gus Karantzoulis appointed BLG’s National Group Head, Specialized Business Law

Toronto (July 8, 2025) - We are pleased to announce the appointment of Gus Karantzoulis as BLG’s National Group Head, Specialized Business Law.

Gus is a partner in our Toronto office, a member of the firm’s Financial Services Group and is the outgoing chair of the Partnership Board. His practice includes lending, bank mergers and acquisitions, structured finance and securitization, project and infrastructure finance, private equity and debt capital markets. Gus has served on the Partnership Board since 2019 and has held the role of Chair since 2023.

As Group Head, Gus will be responsible for advancing the business strategy, financial performance and client service delivery of the National Specialized Business Law Group. Group Heads are members of the firm’s National Management Committee and play a key role in shaping the firm’s overall direction and operations.
